James_Goodbar@nm.blm.govnSubject: Karst/speleological library - Call for helpnnDear Colleagues, nnTwo days ago my house in the Kiev suburb has bu
ed away completely in a fire. nnA really irreplaceable and painful loss is a karst/cave library.nThis library was one of the largest karst/cave libraries (if not the largest one) in the ex-USSR countries. It was collected during almost 40 years and contained over 10,000 volumes of specifically karst/cave literature (plus books on general geology and geography). The library contained most of publications on karst and caves ever published in Russian and Ukrainian languages, as well as a very large body of the inte
ational literature on the subject (including full collections of major specialized jou
als, most of conference/congress proceedings, major monographs and texts, etc.). Although privately maintained, it served for many years as a central karst/speleological library in Ukraine and was extensively used by many researchers and cave explorers, already through several generations. nnWith the recent establishment of the Ukrainian Institute of Speleology and Karstology (UISK), this library was intended to be transferred to UISK to form a core of the Institute's library. The work was in progress on preparing the library for re-location to the UISK office at Simferopol, Crimea, which was planned for Spring 2007. Unfortunately, we lost this possibility due to the fire. nnAlthough it is impossible to replace the loss of such library entirely, I hope it is possible to mitigate it to a degree √ with the help of the cave/karst community. I call for such help, on behalf of the UISK and Ukr.S.A. nnIf you or your club/society/institution has duplicate copies of cave/karst related publications, could you, please, consider donating them to the UISK? We are particularly interested in cave/karst periodicals, conference proceedings, monographs and texts, bibliographical and cave inventory publications, but generally √ in any kind of karst/cave specific publications which you could donate. We would highly appreciate any donation √ from a single book or a jou
al issue to a bunch of publications. nnIf you consider making a donation, please, send publications by nsurface mail to the following address: nnUkrainian Institute of Speleology and Karstology c/o Boris Vakhrushev Tavrichesky National University n4 Prospect Ve
adskogo,nSimferopol 95007nUkrainennWhen shipping, please, do not indicate any monetary value of the content, or indicate small values if inevitable (to avoid custom charges). We are prepared to meet shipping expenses when advised (please contact me at
klim@speleogenesis.info in this regard). nnWe'll gratefully acknowledge donors names in the electronic library catalogue, which will be made accessible via Inte
et. The Institute is intended to provide bibliography/copying service to researchers and explorers from the ex-USSR countries and inte
ationally. nnThe critical importance of the access to publications is well known to researchers and serious explorers. Your help in restoring the central karst/speleological library in Ukraine would be very important in fostering future cadre of karst scholars and cave explorers in nUkraine and adjacent countries. nnBest wishes!nnSincerely,nn--Alexander Klimchouknn***********************************************nDr.Alexander KlimchouknDirector, Ukrainian Institute of Speleology and Karstology P.O.Box 136, Kiev-30, 01030, UkrainenE-mail:
